Following a donation to the Friends of Roundhay Park by the Lester family a new library of over 200 books based on parks, wildlife and nature has opened in the entrance to the education room of the Mansion House, Roundhay Park, Leeds.

The Library is a great resource for visitors to the park, and is a lasting memorial to Bernard Lester, a local head teacher who enjoyed the park daily and was a great supporter of Roundhay Park.

Bernard was heard by many thousands of visitors to the park as the voice on the public address system announcing the various events taking place on Roundhay Park Childrens Day, the 'Printers Gala' which is a memory of many Leeds residents.

Children’s Day at Roundhay Park Leeds ran from 1922 until 1963, the day was one of the biggest festivals of its type staged anywhere in Britain and attracted 100,000 people in its heyday. Pupils from just about every school in Leeds congregated in Roundhay Park for dancing, displays and sport.

The Lester Library will be accessible on Wednesdays and Saturdays, and staffed by volunteers from the Friends of Roundhay Park.
