Set out by Nicholson during the mid 1800s, the Upper lake was enclosed by the mature sylvan landscape of the medieval Ram and Castle Woods.
In Nicholsons day it would be possible to have a clearer view of his Mansion House on the brow of the hill overlooking the lake. Today the trees, now mature, hide the house but for the odd glimpse.
